No residents were home at the time so firefighters forced entry into the home to find high heat and smoke conditions. Image
A pet portrait by Carly Beck (Courtesy) Heading to the Hamptons this weekend? Then you’d best pop by Amagansett Square on Saturday to check out the pet portraiture of Carly Beck. The fashionable artist, who accrues an awful lot of likes on Instagram for her detailed interpretations of personality-filled animals wearing the latest fashion collections, is coming to the Hamptons thanks to Mandala Yoga’s Yummy Yoga Goods boutique. Carly, you have a background in fashion as a sales executive and handbag designer. You turned your attentions to painting relatively recently. What initially got you interested in pet portraiture? I love creating little worlds that capture my love of interiors, pets and fashion. My favorite thing is to see the personality of the pet develop on the canvas. “Helen” (Courtesy) What is your creative process like...

Dog days of summer: Local pets have last hurrah at city pool – Port Huron Times Herald

Image
Jackie Smith Port Huron Times Herald Published 10:05 AM EDT Aug 15, 2019 Things at Port Huron’s Sanborn Pool got a little hairy during the last day of the swimming season.  City parks and recreation opened up Sanborn to local pet owners’ dogs on Wednesday before closing for the summer, and amid a late-afternoon event, dogs of a variety of breeds cooled off while their owners watched from the side. “This is exactly what I expected — thank goodness,” recreation coordinator Kati Gardener said with laugh, while her 9-year-old chocolate lab Cassius tugged on his leash. “I think some breeds like labs, retrievers, are just natural swimmers and some aren’t. And people know their dogs well enough.” It was the first time the city let dogs in a local pool, and officials joked it also took some arm-twisting to get in gear. Although some lifeguards and pool staff were in the water, ...

‘Finding Dory’ did not increase demand for pet fish, despite viral media stories – Phys.Org

Credit: Martin Pelanek / shutterstock; Disney / Pixar If a piece of information is repeated often enough, it will eventually be believed, even if there is no evidence for it. One example of this features the friendly clownfish Nemo and his side-kick Dory, a blue tang fish, who you may know from the animated blockbusters Finding Nemo and Finding Dory. Everyone loves Nemo. But to some, his rise to global stardom in 2003 had a darker side, as news outlets around the world reported that the popularity of the movie was leading an increasing number of people to buy clownfish as pets. These articles claimed that this increase in demand was a threat to wild populations . While there was little to no evidence to support this story, with so much repetition, the so-called Nemo Effect became conventional wisdom. So it wasn’t surprising that before its sequel, Finding Dory, was released in 2016, a chorus of voices, including Ellen DeGeneres wh...
